Facebook May Launch Messenger App For iPad On Tuesday

It is being speculated that Facebook will launch an Android-based phone at the press event on Tuesday, January 15th.

TechCrunch now reports that Facebook could also launch the Messenger app for the iPad.

Facebook released the initial version of Facebook Messenger app for the iPhone back in August 2011, followed by the revamped version in September 2012, but strangely hasn?t released the universal version of the app that?s compatible with the iPad.

Alexia Tsotsis of TechCrunch reports that Facebook could release the Messenger app as early as Tuesday:

I?m hearing that Messenger for iPad, replete with all the Messenger features we?ve come to love like emoticons, photosharing, read receipts, location tagging, group messaging, and the new voice-recorded messaging feature, is ready for the public eye. And basically, it?s what exists on the iPad but in a bigger format.

According to one source, the app is ?totally? ready to launch on Tuesday, and if the event is indeed?a series of mobile product announcements, it could ?totally? fit in conceptually. Other points that back this up: We?ve heard that Messenger head Peter Deng was ?cranking? a couple of days ago and Facebook partner Microsoft is killing its Messenger service exactly a month after whatever it is is being announced.

Facebook had recently added VoIP feature to the Messenger app for users in Canada?and the ability to send voice memos. It also doesn?t seem far fetched that Facebook will also add video calling feature to the app in the future.

It remains to be see if Instagram and Poke ? the other Facebook apps that are not yet compatible with the iPad, will get iPad support.
