BUJUMBURA (Reuters) - Burundi's year-on-year inflation rate jumped to 11.4 percent in June, its highest level since December, as food prices surged, the country's statistics board said on Thursday.
Inflation rose from 8.2 percent in May. The price index for food rose 14.4 percent in the year to June against 9.6 percent in May, the Institute of Economic Studies and Statistics (ISTEEBU) said in its monthly report.
Food is one of the major components used in measuring the inflation rate in the small east African nation of over 8 million people.
In its recent report on Burundi's economic situation, the International Monetary Fund said lower food and oil prices should improve the inflation outlook in the landlocked country.
Burundi's government last month cut its 2013 growth forecast for the coffee-producing economy to 4.8 percent, from 6.6 percent due to revenue shortfalls and slow economic activity in the first quarter of the year.
The IMF forecasts 4.5 percent growth for Burundi this year.
